DESIGNED
TO BENEFIT:
Regular Educators
who teach mainstreamed students.
Special Educators
who need updating on promising practices.
Administrators
who implement new regulations.
Our workshops help teachers apply effective teaching strategies for students
with perceptual, attentional, and behavioral differences. Emphasis is placed
on classroom modifications including reducing assignment complexity, adjusting
rate and volume, helping students focus on salient details, and ideas for
creating newness and variety of instruction. Workshops reflect the findings
of a study of 10 school districts in South Jersey regarding "teacher
tips" and strategies frequently used to adapt the classroom to the
needs of students with mild learning and attentional disorders. All
workshops include hands-on small group activities.
Workshop I
Developing Instructional and Behavioral
Modifications for Students with Mild Disabilities
in the Regular Classroom
This workshop presents effective teaching
strategies to meet the needs of mainstreamed students.
Hands-on experience adapting instruction and materials
will be a part of this workshop. The program includes
activities designed to generate modifications for
students who have difficulty completing assignments,
organizing their workspace/materials/time, interacting
with peers, obeying classroom rules, and maintaining
self-control. This workshop covers how Section 504
of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is used to provide
accommodations to students with mild learning and
attentional weaknesses in the mainstream classroom.
Workshop 2
ADD/LD Update: Classroom Management
Techniques for the Classroom Teacher
This workshop is designed to promote
an understanding of the relationship between attentional
and learning disabilities. Strategies will be presented
for simplifying daily life with students who have
varying degrees of learning and attentional differences.
Modifications will be presented to support the learning styles of auditory)
visual) and hands-on learners*
Both workshops are updated yearly to
reflect state of the art management techniques presented
at the Annual National CHADD (CHildren and Adults
with Attention Deficit Disorders) Convention, and
to include current research results on learning disabilities.
AND FOR PARENTS:
Workshop 3
Helping Your Child Succeed in School
This workshop is designed to show parents
how they can help their children become responsible
learners. Developmental stages of the parent-student
relationship will be discussed, as well as what parents need to know regarding
helping their children become independent workers. Strategies to assist
with homework and study skills will be presented.
